In a past life regression session you talk with the practitioner about your intention, settle into deep relaxation with your eyes closed, are gently guided to notice images and feelings that may relate to a past life, reflect on what they mean for you now, and then return slowly to full awareness before talking it through. To prepare, choose one clear intention, get a good night's sleep, eat lightly, avoid alcohol, and set aside quiet time afterwards. You stay aware and in control throughout.

Knowing what to expect is the best way to relax, and relaxing is what makes a session flow. Here is the whole journey, from booking to the days after.

Before you book

Think about why you want to try regression. Common intentions:

  • understanding a fear that does not seem to come from this life
  • exploring a strong pull to a place, culture or era
  • understanding a relationship that feels very old
  • curiosity about your soul's journey

If you are unsure which theme to explore, an Akashic Records reading first can help you find it. See how the two work together.

How to prepare

In the week before

  • Write your intention in one sentence, such as "I would like to understand where my fear of deep water comes from."
  • Notice recurring dreams, déjà vu or strong reactions and jot them down. Our guide to past life signs can help.
  • Keep expectations open. The goal is to explore, not to see a particular scene.

On the day

  • Sleep well the night before.
  • Eat a light meal an hour or two before. Very hungry or very full both make relaxation harder.
  • Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs.
  • Wear comfortable clothes and bring a light layer, as people often feel cooler when deeply relaxed.
  • Allow quiet time afterwards. Do not plan a big meeting straight after.

For an online session

  • A private room where you will not be interrupted for two hours.
  • Headphones, so the guidance feels close and clear.
  • A recliner, couch or bed with good support for your head.
  • Your device propped up so the practitioner can see you are comfortable.
  • A glass of water and a notebook nearby.

What happens, step by step

1. The conversation

The practitioner asks about your intention, any health considerations and what you already know about the theme. This is a good time to ask questions and say if anything worries you.

2. Relaxation

With your eyes closed, you are guided to slow your breathing and relax your body, often from head to toe. Many people find this part alone deeply restful.

3. Deepening

The practitioner may use imagery such as walking down steps, crossing a bridge or moving through a gentle light. This helps your attention turn inward.

4. Exploration

You are invited to notice what comes. Open questions are common: "What do you notice under your feet?", "Are you inside or outside?", "How do you feel?" You answer out loud. Impressions may be visual, emotional, physical or a quiet knowing. If nothing comes, that is fine, and the practitioner will gently try another approach.

5. Key moments

You may be guided to significant moments in that life, and sometimes to its end, viewed calmly and from a distance. You never need to relive anything distressing. You can always ask to move on or stop.

6. Reflection

While still relaxed, you may reflect on what that life was learning and how it connects with now.

7. Returning

You are guided back slowly, with time to feel your body, the room and the present day.

8. Talking it through

You discuss what came up and how it might relate to your life, and note anything you want to reflect on.

How it feels

Most people describe feeling very relaxed, a little heavy, and aware of the room. Some are surprised by how emotional it can be. Others feel calm and curious. Time often seems to pass quickly.

After the session

  • Drink water and have something to eat.
  • Write down what you remember straight away, including small details.
  • Avoid big decisions for a few days.
  • Treat the story as a reflection, not a fact about other people.
  • If strong feelings stay, talk to someone you trust or your GP. Lifeline is available on 13 11 14.

Our guide on what to do after an Akashic Records reading has a journaling method that works just as well after regression.
